The only difference between right and left is that the right have the directorships and the back handers when in power, while the left have to wait until they lose power to get their snouts in the trough.

If someone projected a need to build 250000 new homes, but neglected to account for an extra 300000 new people, then their figures probably aren't great. Even if you take those figures at face value, you are faced with a near doubling of demand.
I suspect though that the 245000 figure includes projections for immigration.

So, hang on a minute...let me get this straight: you agree that house prices are too high, but don't think that building more houses is part of the solution? And you have “economics training”?
Even I'm embarrassed for you now. You've had a 'mare here.
Bizarrely, the construction and property industries, among others, furnish specialist research on...wait for it...the property market! As I stated, the point I make about the historical relationship between prices and construction is pretty much universally accepted. But then, if you knew anything about this, you'd know that already...

Actually, the 250K new builds required per annum would be to satisfy existing demographics.
Of course, as I clearly state below, immigration will have an impact. But the problem did not suddenly appear last year or even with the rise in immigration in recent years, it's been getting worse since the '80s notably as a function of insufficient house building.
There is reams of evidence for this, and it's a point of view almost universally accepted across the political spectrum and certainly within the property and construction industries. You'll find plenty of articles and research from journals and think tanks not known for their Marxist tendencies.
It's blindingly obvious that there are a range of factors involved in historically high UK house-price-to-income ratios. Immigration may be one of them (there are actually respected commentators who argue that it has zero impact, but I find this hard to accept), it's just far from the most significant.

Most recent completion rates I saw for the UK were under 100K per annum (22K per quarter, or 88K p.a., IIRC).
Re. the data, I've got a deadline to meet, but will get back to you another time. Also, I'm vaguely interested to see what our genius OP comes up before giving him all the answers...

I agree supply is too low. Politicians cant win here.
More houses are built then they're not listening to voters concerned about over development.
Less houses are built and we have a housing crisis.
I don't think people realise just how many homes we need. Correct me if I'm wrong Mart but don't we need 400,000 odd?
